Training requirements

Training requirements

  1. Students grading for 1st Dan blackbelt must attend at their home dojo and train for a minimum of 100 lessons after passing  the 1st Kyu brown belt grading.
    • More than 100 lessons may be necessary when:
      • Students jump from 2nd kyu to 1st Kyu and have not had sufficient time to fully absorb and comprehend the syllabus.
      • Training has not been continuous i.e. When there have been breaks in lesson attendance for month or more.
  2. Students must train hard throughout the period and have reached a minimum standard before being permitted to grade.
  3. Students must be able to demonstrate that they can perform the following sections of the syllabus with sufficient accuracy, power and control at high speed before being allowed to grade.
    1. Basics (kihon),
    2. kata
    3. jiyu ippon, (including okuri jiyu ippon and gi jiyu ippon),
  4. Training outside the home dojo is considered extra training and does not contribute towards the 100 lesson required
  5. Only the head instructor of the student's home dojo can give permission for the student to grade for blackbelt. This decision is final.

Examiners and instructors are looking for the kind of movement that is relaxed and powerful at high speed as opposed to being strong but where muscles are too tense or stiff.

Attend Advanced karate sessions

Attend Advanced karate sessions

In the months leading up to the Dan grading students must train at the monthly Jin Sei Kai advanced karate sessions held on the first Saturday of the month.

Students of 1st Kyu and above should attend these monthly sessions whenever possible

The location, date and time of the monthly advanced karate lesson can be found at the Jin Sei Kai website.

Training at the monthly sessions provides the examination team with an opportunity observe and advise students and suggest improvements to technique and karate skills. These sessions also enable the examiners to get to know the students and see them perform techniques in normal training conditions.

Sometimes students can become nervous when taking Dan grade examinations but examiners can make allowances for this as long as they have seen them previously at the monthly sessions.

It cannot be emphasised enough that students pass Dan gradings by training hard in their home class and the monthly lessons rather than expecting to be "good on the day" in a grading.
